Habitual Bike-Lifter Convicted in Thirukovilur

VILLUPURAM: The Thirukovilur magistrate court on Saturday sentenced a 40-year-old serial bike-lifter to one-year imprisonment in connection with four cases of bike theft committed by the accused in Thirukovilur in 2013.

Ashok of Thirupur Kumaran street in Salavanpetta, was arrested by a Sankarapuram police patrol team three years ago. He confessed to have taken at least four bikes - three from Thirukovilur police station limits and another from Thirupalapandhal station limits.

The police tracked all four bikes and remanded the offender to Cuddalore police station. At the trial that took place in Thirukovilur Magistrate court on Saturday. Magistrate P Shanmugaraj sentenced Ashok to a year in jail. He was taken to Cuddalore central prison after being convicted.

Meanwhile, police  on Saturday night caught two of a gang of robbers, and were searching for three more.

According to sources, on Saturday night, the Kottakuppam police got a tip-off that some people were standing under supicious circumstances at the Meat Shop Street with scythe-like weapons.

On seeing a police team , the gang got scattered. The police chased them and caught two persons, who were identified as S Karuppu alais Prabhu((30) of Chinna Kottakuppam, and Vignesh(24) of Karuvadikuppam in Puducherry.

The three men who escaped were identified as M Kalaiarasan(32) and Balaji of Lenin street in Kosapalayam in Puducherry and Suresh(32) of Kottakuppam. They were reportedly lying in wait to snatch valubles from passersby, and were armed with knives and scythes.

A case was filed by the police and they were remanded in the Cuddalore jail on the same night after being presented before the Tindivanam judicial magistrate II.  A manhunt has been launched to apprhend for the other three.
