Sarada Menon Chosen for Avvaiyar Award

CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced that Dr M Sarada Menon (92)has been chosen for Avvaiyar award of Tamil Nadu government for this year. The award carries `1 lakh, a gold medal weighing eight grams, a certificate of merit and a shawl.

Dr Sarada Menon, founder of Schizophrenia Care and Research Centre (SCARF), has pioneered the efforts to rehabilitate persons with mental disorders.

The award has been instituted to encourage women who are excelling in social reforms, women’s development, communal harmony, arts, science, culture, journalism and administration etc.
