SALEM: A couple along with their daughter and son committed suicide on Sunday, after their eldest daughter eloped and married an auto driver.
Rajendran (45), a farmer residing at Thandanur near Pethanaickenpalayam, was a Vanniyar. He had two daughters, Mohana (22) and Arthi (20), and a son Naveen (17). Mohana completed BA in English Literature and was preparing for competitive exams.

Two years ago, Mohana fell in love with Manikandan (23), an auto driver from Vanniyar community and a resident of Karipatty near Vazhapadi. She met him at one of her relatives’ marriage. When her parents came to know about them, they strongly opposed their relationship.

After unsuccessful attempts to convince her parents, Mohana eloped on August 3 with her lover and got married at a registrar office in Coimbatore. Rajendran then lodged a missing complaint with the Yethapur Police. On Friday, the couple arrived at Karipatty Police Station and sought protection from parents.

Despite police attempt to pacify them, Rajendran opposed to the marriage and asked Mohana to return home. But Mohana was firm on her decision and refused to go with parents. Following this, on Sunday morning, the couple and two of their children were found dead.
