CUDDALORE: Emphasising the importance of unity among the party cadre, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said that if the 1.5 crore party members stood united, nobody could capture the party and the government through backdoor.

Not only the chief minister, but most of the speakers who addressed the MGR centenary celebration held in Cuddalore on Wednesday, pointed out the importance of party unity and the need to strengthen the government.

Palaniswami said: “Some persons say that the days of the government are being counted. I want to tell them that we are in the AIADMK with an aim to serve the people. Nobody can touch this party. We are the students, who learnt from two great leaders MGR and Jayalalithaa. We have no fear for anything.”

Responding to the criticism regarding the meeting of chief minister and ministers with the Prime Minister, Palaniswami said: “The release of Tamil Nadu fishermen from Sri Lanka was the outcome of our meeting. We have been meeting him only for the benefit of the State. I was born in a family of farmers. Only in the AIADMK, it is possible for a normal person like me to become the chief minister. I am the best example for that. As a farmer I feel proud that I got the opportunity to hoist the national flag at Fort St George. That is a proud moment for the farming community.”

“Some persons are questioning why the MGR centenary year is being celebrated as a government function. It was our Amma’s decision to celebrate the MGR’s centenary year by the government. We are just implementing Amma’s order. In these functions, we have been distributing welfare measures to large number of beneficiaries,” he said.
