THENI: After all the protests held for over a month now, the giant well’s owner, Subburaj, on Saturday, gave a written statement to the villagers assuring to donate the well to the village.
After a talk with residents and agitation committee, Subburaj assured to give away his giant well located at Kombai area, free of cost. In a Rs 100 value bond, he stated that he donated his giant well for the use of Lakshmipuram residents. The written statement also mentioned that the registration would take place on August 21.
Karthikeyan of Lakshmipuram, one of the members of the agitation committee said, “Subburaj had a talk with former Chief Minister O Panneer Selvam over phone and he assured to give his giant well and 18 cent land, free of cost to the village. The registration would be held on August 21.” He then pointed out that later, the residents decided to purchase a two acre land located near the giant well. He further added that villagers are eagerly waiting for the registration day.
Lakshmipuram village got together in order to protest against this giant well, as it affected the ground water table. The village reportedly faced water scarcity and the residents staged various agitations. Vijayalakshmi wife of former Chief Minister O Panneer Selvam, was the owner of the well previously. However, the ownership was later transferred to Subburaj of Lakshmipuram.
