CHENNAI: Taking exception to the statutory notice being issued to farmers by a primary agricultural cooperative credit society for recovery of loan dues despite directives from the government not to do so, the Registrar of Cooperative Societies has reiterated that statutory notices should not be issued to farmers until further orders.

In a recent communication to all concerned, the Registrar of Cooperative Societies A Gnanasekaran directed that proactive steps should be taken to convert short term crop loans into medium term loans.
He also directed that the maximum number of farm loans be given to the eligible farmers, whenever the farmers approached the primary agricultural cooperative credit society for crop loans and achieve the target.

Talking to Express, Gnanasekaran said short term loans should be repaid within a year.
Since they were being converted into medium term loans, the farmers would get three years time.
Besides they would also be eligible for fresh loans immediately. So far, `133 crore had been given as fresh loans to around 22,000 farmers from April 1.
Gnanasekaran also said that after declaring Tamil Nadu as drought hit, short term loans of `144 crore taken by 46,657 farmers had been converted into medium term loans so far.
