CHENNAI: THE first bench of the Madras HC on Friday dismissed a PIL seeking to quash a notification of Chennai Metro Rail Limited inviting tenders for granting advertisement rights on piers and portals along the corridor I and II of phase 1 of CMRL.

In the PIL, PS Prabu of Saidapet, submitted that the two corridors have 592 pillars, mostly located on the middle of arterial roads namely Koyambedu-Alandur-Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Saidapet-St Thomas Mount-Anna Salai and Alandur-Chennai Airport-Grand Southern Trunk Road.

Of this, 186 are at junction and corner of the roads, 22 near hospitals and nine each near temples and mosques and schools and colleges. Most pillars for which advertisement licence has been called for are situated at the median. If they are allowed, the same will distract motorists, he said.

Premature

The PIL challenging the tender notice is premature and hence dismissed, the bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar said
