CHENNAI: MDMK general secretary Vaiko was remanded in a case relating to sedition charges, sources said.

The XIV metropolitan magistrate (in charge) Gopinath, before whom Vaiko voluntarily surrendered on Monday, ordered him to be remanded in judicial custody till 17 April.

The charges slapped on Vaiko were under sections124(A) and 153 of Indian Penal Code in a sedition case registered at 9 December, 2009, in connection with a speech delivered at an indoor meeting held on 15 September, 2009.

The police filed the charge sheet in 30 December, 2010 but failed to serve summons necessitating his surrender, the sources noted.

When the magistrate offered to grant bail if he had furnished personal bond, Vaiko refused to apply.
