CHENNAI: A day after a youth was kidnapped in broad daylight in a Jaguar car by a gang, the police are yet to ascertain the victim and the kidnapper gang.

The incident took place at CTH Road at Thirumullaivoyal here around 5 pm on Tuesday and the police started investigating after a CCTV footage of the daring kidnap was shown to the police by the local residents.

But later on Tuesday night, V Akash Ebenezer, aged 19 and a first-year BA student, went to the Thirumullaivoyal Police Station and told the police he was the kidnapped person and released by the kidnappers around 9 pm the same day. He claimed it was due to some previous enmity. However, the police officers say they are not yet convinced by the claims of Ebenezer and are further probing to find out the identities of the kidnappers using the CCTV footage.

The first alert of the incident came from the public who saw a man, who was walking on the roadside, suddenly pulled by a gang of four or five men into a white Jaguar car and saw the car zip ahead from the place. The recording in a CCTV camera in a building nearby also proved that a kidnap took place at the spot. But till late in the night the police did not receive any man missing complaint and were trying to find the identity of the kidnapped person.

But later, Ebenezer,  a resident of Shenoy Nagar and a BA student in a deemed university, came to the police and said he was the kidnapped person and the gang dropped him near Thirunindravur on the outskrits of the city. “He also has a murder case pending against him in the T P Chathiram police station. He claims that the gang kidnapped  him due to previous enmity. He was walking on the road as the motorbike he was riding along with another person got punctured. As the other person took the motorbike for a puncture shop, he was walking to the shop when he was kidnapped,” said a police officer, based on what Ebenezer had told police.

From the video, it was clear that men who came in the Jaguar car had parked the car on the roadside and were waiting for the moment the victim was to cross the car. They suddenly opened the car door and forcibly took him inside the car.  “We don’t believe Ebenezer also and are investigating from all angles,” said a police officer.

A case of kidnap has been registered based on the complaint of one A Ganesan.
