CHENNAI: When the government launches a scheme for the welfare of the people, usurpation of the same by a political party would lead to serious protest by the public and would render public peace and tranquility at risk, Salem District Collector submitted in his counter-affidavit filed in the Madras High Court on Monday. The counter was filed in response to a writ petition from DMK legal wing secretary R Girirajan, praying for a direction not to prevent party working president M K Stalin from inspecting the desilting works carried out by party cadre in the lakes and tanks in the State.

It was imperative on the part of the government to take swift action to prevent such perilous incidents to maintain public harmony and tranquility. Public interest is paramount rather than that of a particular political party, the counter said. The relief sought is an omnibus one; granting it without any infringement on  any fundamental right would act as a free ticket to them to enter into any part of the State at any time unmindful of the law and order situation, the counter added and sought dismissal of the petition.
