CHENNAI: Furious That His neighbour’s daughter refused to marry him, a middle aged man allegedly slashed the 21-year-old woman with a knife in broad daylight at T Nagar on Wednesday afternoon.
The man managed to flee the spot, but was nabbed by the city police soon.
Police said Satya Narayanan, a neighbour of P Sumathi (40) of Kannagi Nagar had known each other for the last 11 years.

“They were friends. In the recent past, Satya was forcing Sumathi to get her 21-year-old daughter married to him. “After the mother and daughter repeatedly turned down the proposal, Satya attacked the young woman while she was on her way to office,” said the police. “The victim had got off the bus and was walking towards her office in T Nagar when Satya followed her.

“As she entered a narrower, isolated street, Satya approached her and proposed again. When she rejected him, he took out a small knife and slashed her neck and face,” the police added.
Hearing her screams, the local public went to her rescue, but the man managed to escape.
Passers-by took the young woman who was injured in the attack to a nearby hospital where she was being treated.

Mambalam Police has registered a case and formed a team which arrested the man. Further probe is on.
During the probe, it was found that Sumathi was separated from her husband and lived with her daughter for the past 15 years.

“When they moved to Kannagi Nagar, Sumathi was introduced to Satya, who lived close by and worked at a plastic recycle shop. Recently, he began asking Sumathi to give her daughter in marriage with him.
“Satya also found the young woman talking to another young man and was furious,” said the investigating officer.
