Memes come to aid of AIDS awareness

CHENNAI: With social media being a popular channel to reach youngsters, the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society took to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and other social networking sites, creating memes, which have become an instant hit.

The Society is sharing two memes daily, incorporating popular movie dialogues, on its social networking pages. The memes were floated to raise awareness on AIDS, blood donation and myths about transmission of HIV.

A few of the memes are: “Nan mersala suthitu irunthaen, ippathan norasal ayitaen” - a lyric from Vikram-starer “I” , popularly called ‘Merasalayitaen’ song.

“Kurithiveera Nee un Veerathal Mattum Makkalai Kaaptravillai. Nee Un Kurithiyae Koduthum Makkalai Kaapatrugiraai!!” This meme is a modification of a line from Prabhas-starer ‘Baahubali’.

These memes were shared widely by youngsters on social media. “It is also cost-effective. To erect a hoarding along the national highway would cost `10,000 or so. But to create memes, we spend only around `1,000 or so. Also, memes are getting maximum likes and shares as many youngsters on social media are sharing them,” said Dr K Senthilraj, programme director, TANSACS.

TANSACS has been sharing memes on its pages for the last one month. It already has over 1,600 followers on Facebook and over 50 followers on Instagram and Twitter.
