Final decision on Jallikattu soon: Environment Minister

Dave said he had telephonic conversation with home minister Friday and the entire process will be completed by Friday evening or Saturday.

NEW DELHI: Home Minister Rajnath Singh has received a proposal from Tamil Nadu government regarding conduction of Jallikattu and a final decision keeping in mind sentiments of lover of the cultural sport will be taken in the shortest possible time, Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave said Friday.

Dave said he had telephonic conversation with home minister and the entire process will be completed by Friday evening or Saturday. He also met AIADMK MPs earlier in the morning.    

“TN CM met Prime Minister yesterday and PM has appreciated sentiments and cultural value of different cultural sports specially jallikattu. Today in morning, home minister has received a proposal from TN government and that entire draft is under consideration,” Dave told reporters.

He said that concerned ministries like environment and law are discussing the proposal.

Ï am sure that within given the shortest time, we will be able to reach on a final decision. I appreciate the patience of people and the way the entire movement is going on, we will be able to conclude it successfully. It is matter of time and time means not more than a day or two,” he said.

On the likely procedure that government is thinking, Dave said: “Because procedure has to be adopted so thoroughly and so detailed that no lacunae should be left behind. Today Attorney General has said in front of Chief Justice of India that please hold everything and he has been assured that will be done accordingly.”

“I think let this entire process happen, by today evening or tomorrow, we will be able to reach on some conclusion where we can have some concrete structure in front of the jallikattu lovers,” the minister added.

On TN’s demand for an ordinance that will remove bull from list of performing animals, Dave said that ordinance is just a temporary solution so that is why we are exploring all possibilities.

“We want there must be proper protection of TN cultural sentiments and it will be a permanent solution. I am of belief that everything should be done completely,  constructively and not half-heartedly.”

“I want sentiments, particularly cultural values of people to be protected,” he added.
