MADURAI: The Madurai Corporation mistakenly posted the telephone number of one P K Jigesh, a resident of Karur district and administrator at the HR department of a private company, in place of one Selvakumar, sanitary inspector of Madurai Corporation, on the corporation’s website. As a result, Jigesh has been receiving frequent calls and messages from the public, complaining about sanitary problems. It has been a year now, but this mistake has not been rectified in spite of Jigesh bringing it to the notice of authorities.

Getting wrong calls and messages frequently can be quite an annoying experience for anyone, more so for a HR staff receiving calls to clean the garbage of another city. The problem for Jigesh has multiplied manifold because his number has been posted on a government website.

It is a closed user group (CUG) number, given to me by the company that I work for, for official purpose. But I have been receiving regular complaints from people of Madurai city for more than a year now; despite reporting the issue to the Corporation and district administration officials several times the problem has not been rectified,” said Jigesh.

“Since it is my official number, I can’t even ignore the calls as the person calling might be my client. Failing to attend calls of clients may put my job in jeopardy,” he lamented. Apart from the inconvenience that this mistake is causing in Jigesh’s personal life what has appalled him is what the sanitory inspector might be doing in all these days, as all the public complaints and notifications were received by him and not the sanitary inspector.

“All those complaints, which were sent to the wrong number by the public, in hope of getting remedy for the sanitation-related problems in their areas, have been left unnoticed by the corporation, making a mockery of their trust in the civic body,” Jigesh said. What has further complicated the problem for Jigesh is that the number has also been added to the list of workers under Swachh Bharat Mission, resulting in Jigesh receiving various notifications regarding the activities of the mission.

“Despite bringing it to the notice of the Corporation, as well as the district administration, the issue has not been resolved. I had also sent a complaint, with screenshots of the messages, to the collector’s WhatsApp number, but to no avail,” he  said.
