VILLUPURAM:At a time when spread of dengue and other fevers is causing concern, a group of residents from Villupuram approached the Collectorate with a long-standing problem which has been aggrevated recently after drinking water mixed with drainage was supplied during the last month.

According to sources, more than 500 Dalit families live at GRP and Nandhanar streets located opposite the old GH. The area is a neglected one and is notorius for arrack brewing. This area has always had a garbage problem, a major share of which has been blamed on the GH. Piling garbage attracts pigs and area does not even have a regular garbage pickup facility. Lack of toilets means open defeacation, and there are no covered drains, causing sewage to flow through inhabited area.Residents here have been living in a state of apprehension as the drinking water supplied here has been contaminated by sewage for the past 20 days.
Collector Dr L Subramanian ordered the municipality officials to immediately attend to the problem.
