PALAKKAD: A suspected Maoist, Kalidasan, was taken into custody from Moolakombu ooru (a tribal hamlet) in Attappadi by the Agali police here on Thursday.

Kalidasan hails from Paramakudi near Madurai. Local sources said he was very sick when found in the Moolakombu area. He was reportedly armed.

Kalidasan is said to belong to the Bhavani Dalam which operates in the forests of Silent Valley  and Nilambur.

However, there were reports that Kalidasan was not arrested but surrendered to the police. The Agali police did not confirm that it was an arrest. They said it was the office of the deputy superintendent of police which handles the cases filed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). However, efforts to reach DySP T K Subramanian proved futile as his mobile phone was switched off.
