Madras HC quashes two cases against mining baron Shekhar Reddy

Cases registered by CBI against mining baron J Shekhar Reddy and his men in connection with seizure of Rs 34 crore in new Rs 2,000 currencies, were quashed by the Madras High Court on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: Cases registered by CBI against mining baron J Shekhar Reddy and his men in connection with seizure of Rs 34 crore in new Rs 2,000 currencies, were quashed by the Madras High Court on Wednesday.

Justice S Baskaran quashed the criminal proceedings in the cases while allowing a batch of criminal original petitions from Reddy and his aides K Srinivasalu, K Rethinam and Ramachandran.

The judgement in the cases was reserved on February 28, 2017 and it was delivered on Wednesday.
The judge said it was apparent that the offences alleged in the first FIR and offences covered in the subsequent FIRs were connected and arising out of the same transaction. As such, registration of subsequent FIRs was not proper, the judge said.

“The FIRs in the second and third cases are quashed as against these petitioners. However, the respondent is at liberty to treat the allegations made in them as supplementary allegations or to merge the same to the first FIR,” the judge said.
