Tamil Nadu: Water released from Azhiyar Dam to irrigate 6,400 acres

COIMBATORE: Water from the Azhiyar dam near Pollachi in the district was released today to irrigate 6,400 acres of land.

State Municipal Administration minister, S P Velumani, who opened the dam's sluice gates on the occasion, said considering the storage and inflow, 1,083 million CFT of water would be released for 120 days, till November five.

The water, released through five canals, would benefit the old ayacut area, he said.

Velumani said that under the 'Kudimaramathu' scheme, all desilting works in ponds and lakes, involving the community, had been completed in all panchayats and corporation areas, which would help raise the groundwater level.

This would help the public get water without any problem, particularly during summer, he said.

The Deputy Speaker in the assembly, Pollachi V Jayaraman, District Collector, T N Hariharan were among those present on the occasion, an official releases said.
