Thousands observe Immanuel Sekaran death anniversary at Paramakudi

Over 5,000 police personnel were deployed in Paramakudi to maintain law and order. Apart from minor issues, the event was held smoothly.

RAMANATHAPURAM: The 65th death anniversary of Immanuel Sekaran was commemorated on Sunday as political leaders and a large number of people thronged to pay their respects at his memorial at Paramakudi. Ministers Rajakannappan and KKSSR Ramachandran, DMK youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin and several other politicos paid respects.

Over 5,000 police personnel were deployed in Paramakudi to maintain law and order. Apart from minor issues, the event was held smoothly. Residents from 11 villages in the district hosted Mulappari and milk pot procession to Paramanakudi for the guru puja.

20-year-old electrocuted
At the Paramakudi Railway station, a 20-year-old youth got electrocuted when he tried to wave a flag while atop a train. The flagpole came in contact with the high power lines. Police said amid the commemoration, few youth who came to pay respects barged into the station and among them Mukesh (20), of Devakottai, climbed on a train at the station. He is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Madurai.

CM lauds departed leader
Chennai: Chief Minister MK Stain lauded departed leader Immanuel Sekaran on Sunday. “On memorial day of Immanuel Sekaran, who mobilised people from oppressed community and unyieldingly fought to uphold their identity and self-respect till last breath, I pay homage to his struggles and sacrifices,” he tweeted.
