MADURAI:  Deputy Mayor T Nagarajan of Madurai City corporation staged a sit-in protest at the corporation office in Thiruparangundram zonal office for almost an hour after the grievances meeting held on Tuesday, alleging that his name has been intentionally excluded from official plaques. Following this Mayor V Indirani Ponvasanth assured action with regard to the issue.

According to sources, after the grievance meeting concluded, Nagarajan came before the zone building plaque that was placed at the newly constructed corporation building and began a sit-in protest.

Nagarajan, speaking to TNIE, said that while the plaque that is placed at the zone five office contains names of the mayor, commissioner, and even the zonal president, his name and designation as the deputy mayor of the city, are not mentioned on the plaque.

"Despite raising complaints several times, my name is being excluded from the several official plaques that are placed at the newly constructed city corporation facilities. No action has been taken to include my name yet. I had even written to the Madurai Corporation Commissioner  Simranjeet Singh Kahlon about the issue. Still, no action was taken. I staged the sit-in protest at the zone 5 corporation facility in the afternoon hours demanding a resolution for the same," he added.

Mayor Indirani, over the phone, assured him that action would be taken to include his name on the plaques within a day, following which Nagarajan ceased the protest.

Indirani and corporation commissioner Simranjeet Singh Kahlon along with other officials took part in the grievance redressal meeting held on Tuesday and accepted petitions. About 68 petitions seeking action on various civic issues including encroachment, street lights, and several other issues were submitted to the mayor.
