CHENNAI:  Covid-19 had its impact in her life, but it did not prevent V Keerthika from emerging out with flying colours in the Class 10 board examination.

Putting up a brave face against the financial hurdles caused by the pandemic, the student of Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School (CGHSS) on Pulla Avenue, who got transferred from a private school three years ago, scored 493 marks (98.6%) in the Class 10 examination. Daughter of a tailor, Keerthika said she found that the teaching in the government school to be better than the private school.

“I studied in a private school in my locality till Class 7 and then got shifted to the corporation school. I feel the teachers in CGHSS are better, as they explained the concepts better and ensured that we understood them well,” she said.

Her father Venkadesan said his business dwindled during Covid-19, causing a huge financial strain on the family following which he decided to enrol Keerthika in the government school. “We are happy that she was able to study well in that school and liked the school,” he said.

Speaking about how her friends and family supported her, Keerthika said when she didn’t have the special guides for each subject which would help students study better, her friends - Bharathi and Nasreen - would take pictures of the pages and send them to her.

“Our English teacher Stella would make us write small tests frequently and give gifts if we performed well. My family, friends and teachers helped me a lot to score well,” she further said. She scored centums in Maths and Science, 99 marks in both Tamil and English and 95 marks in Social Science. She added that she wants to become an IAS officer and would choose the commerce group in class 11.
