A few days ago chief secretary Rajiv Sarma had visited the place and appreciated the efforts made by the GHMC and Phoenix Foundation to establish a modern crematorium in a pollution-free environment with greenery all around and chants of Bhagawat Gita hymns reverberating the palce.
The crematorium is developed in an area of 3.70 acres at a cost of around Rs 3 crore. It is a noble initiative by Phoenix Foundation in association with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) under ‘Fund Your City’ programme of GHMC to ensure a dignified and decent cremation for the dead. The clean and green environs of the crematorium make it unique. A nominal fee will be collected from the users.
GHMC special officer Somesh Kumar said that it was for the first time that GHMC had taken up modernisation of a crematorium or graveyard with all basic minimum facilities to perform the last rites in a clean and pollution-free envirornment.
Other major crematoria/graveyards in Greater Hyderabad would be modernised on the same lines in the near future, he said. Work on modernising the Punjagutta crematorium would be taken up very shortly, he said.
