Fee Waiver Likely for Fresh RC with 'TS' Code

HYDERABAD:A file with a proposal to waive the Registration Certificate (RC) fee for reassignment of vehicle registration has been sent by the state transport  commissioner to the principal secretary.

However, people will have to pay for the High Security Registration Plates (HSRP). Along with the proposal, the file contains a set of other recommendations.

The principal secretary will examine the proposals and take a decision in the coming  few days.

The government issued a GO on October 15  stating that the state and district codes in the registration numbers of vehicles, which had been registered in the 10 districts of Telangana before the state’s formation, would be changed from AP to TS and with new district codes.

“It will take time to examine all the proposed guidelines and take a decision on them,” sources said. A system by which vehicle owners can download and take print-out of re-assigned number has also been included in the list of proposals.

The sources, however, said that this provision might enable tricksters to easily download any new RC if they had just a few details of a genuine vehicle owner, and it might lead to problems such as fixing fake number plates for committing crimes.

In August transport minister P.Mahender Reddy gave directions that RC shall be issued only after HSRP plate is affixed, the sources recalled. If the orders are to be implemented, the proposal for downloading new RC may be rejected.

It is also learnt that Link Autotech Pvt Ltd, which manufactures and affixes HSRPs at RTA centres, submitted a proposal to officials of the transport department explaining how they would fix the new number plates to more than 60 lakh old vehicles whose state code would change from AP to TS. The company also listed some procedural steps which would help in smooth conduct of the process.

A meeting will be held between officials of the department and representatives of the company to discuss implementation of the GO.
