Nalgonda's Lifeline Snapping

Nalgonda's Lifeline Snapping

NALGONDA : The lifeline of Nalgonda district, Nagarjuna Sagar project, is on the verge of snapping.

A project, which catered to the irrigation needs of Nalgonda and Khammam districts in Telangana and some districts in neighbouring AP for decades, is now struggling to cater to the drinking water needs thanks to the drought conditions that left very little water in the reservoir.

There are about 90 water bodies in the district. The authorities have been filling these water bodies with the Nagarjunsagar back waters through the Akkampally balancing reservoir for drinking purpose during every summer.

However, the present water levels at NSP have gone below the dead storage level of 510 feet. It is just 508.50 feet now. During 2000-2011, the NSP had the full reservoir level.
