Telengana pegs losses due to rain at Rs. 2,740 cr to Centre's assessing team

The Centre team will visit rain-hit areas in the State capital on Monday, before holding a final meeting with the senior officials of the government.

HYDERABAD: As the Central team began touring the rain-hit areas in the State to assess losses caused by heavy rains to the exchequer, the government on Sunday pegged the losses incurred due to the rains in
Telangana at Rs. 2,740 crore.

“The State had to suffer financial losses to the tune of Rs. 2,740 crore because of the heavy rains that pounded the State in September. Hence, we request the Centre to provide liberal financial aid to recoup these losses,” State government chief secretary Rajiv Sharma told the members of the Central team, who came to Hyderabad on Sunday to assess the ground level situation in rain-affected districts.

According to the presentation given by the chief secretary, municipal department suffered financial losses to the tune of Rs. 848 crore because of heavy rains, the agriculture department incurred Rs. 192.77 crore loss, irrigation department sustained Rs. 112 crore loss, and panchayat raj department suffered losses worth Rs. 290 crore.

Soon after the presentation, the central team began visiting all the rain-hit districts to assess losses.

The team tried to crosscheck the statistics provided by the State with regard to the damage caused by heavy rains. They also personally visited agricultural fields to assess the extent of crop damage, besides interacting with farmers to learn about the losses caused to their livestock and other properties.

The team members will visit rain hit areas in the State capital on Monday, before holding a final meeting with the senior officials of the government.

Tour to K’nagar, Jagtial & Sircilla

The team reached Karimnagar and Jagtial on Sunday to assess crop damage. Their tour to Karimnagar, Jagtial and Rajanna-Sircilla districts will end on Monday.

They inspected SRSP canal breach in Jagtial district. On Monday, they will visit Mid Manair Project and assess the damages in Mustabad mandal.
