HYDERABAD: Asking officials to complete the Mission Bhagiratha works by January 1 next, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has said safe drinking water should be supplied to all the villages as a New Year gift. Recalling his challenge that the TRS will not contest the next general election if all the habitations in the state do not get pure drinking water, Rao said works are going on as per schedule to meet the objective.“Such a challenge has never been made in the country and the works should be executed to meet the challenge. People should get protected drinking water from next year, which would enhance the prestige of the government,” Rao said at a review meeting on Mission Bhagiratha works here on Thursday.

The work on pumps should begin by September and the entire work should be completed by December, he instructed the officials. “Since Mission Bhgiratha is a life-and-death question for the Telangana government, officials, public representatives and working agencies should work day and night to accomplish the task,” he said.

Stating that the mission was taken up at a cost of `43,000 crore, Rao said he would visit the field sites soon as the project is the biggest challenge to his government. Officials informed Rao that except internal works in villages, all other works would be completed by December. “It is a proud movement for working agencies that they are doing such a great work. A 1.5 per cent incentive will be given to those completing the work on time,” Rao told contracting agencies.
