HYDERABAD: With September 17, the day on which the then Hyderabad State was merged with the Indian Union, approaching fast, BJP, which has been advocating for holding the anniversary of ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ as a state function for past ten years, has announced a series of programmes to generate a considerable political momentum in the state for the next fortnight.

In order to raise the tempo by September 17, BJP seniors under the leadership of party state unit chief K Laxman will undertake ‘Telangana Vimochana Yatra’ from September 1 to September 7 across Telangana to exert pressure on the government to celebrate Hyderabad Liberation Day as a state function.

The party leaders will embark on the proposed yatra, after paying tributes to Telangana martyrs at Gunpark here on September 1. The yatra will pass through all historic places such as Gundrampally in Nalgonda where local people had made sacrifices in the Telangana Peasants Armed Struggle against draconian Nizam rule, by laying down their lives.

“The BJP wants the government to celebrate September 17 as a state function to commemorate the liberation of the erstwhile Hyderabad State from Nizam’s rule and its accession with the Indian Republic to pay homage to the freedom fighters,” party leaders — N Ramachandra Rao, G Kishan Reddy, Nallu Indrasena Reddy, N Srivardhan Reddy and T Achary, said here on Tuesday, after finalising the tour schedule.

According to party’s Telangana Vimochana Committee chairman N Srivardhan Reddy, the yatra will be led by K Laxman. All party seniors will take part in the programme. Various Union ministers and BJP national leaders will too intermittently attend the yatra and address public meetings. After holding the yatra, BJP leaders and cadre will organise dharnas in front of collectorates in each district headquarters on September 8.

“BJP workers will hoist the national flag in every nook and cranny of the state on September 17. We will ensure that a good number of people attend the public meeting to be held on the same day in Hyderabad which will be attended by Union Home minister Rajnath Singh,” Kishan Reddy and Ramachandra Rao said.

According to them, the meeting will be held to expose the TRS government’s inability to celebrate Hyderabad Liberation Day on September 17 as a state function. “We will hold the public meeting to show the people how Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has gone back on his promise of organising the Liberation Day as an official function succumbing to the AIMIM’s pressure,” BJP leaders said.
