Telangana Congress veteran Palvai Govardhan Reddy passes away after cardiac arrest in HP

Rajya Sabha member and Telangana Congress veteran Palvai Govardhan Reddy died of a heart attack in Himachal Pradesh’s Kulu.

HYDERABAD: Rajya Sabha member and Telangana Congress veteran Palvai Govardhan Reddy died of a heart attack in Himachal Pradesh’s Kulu on Friday. 

Reddy, who was in Kulu to attend a Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting on Friday morning suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in his car. He passed away by the time he was shifted to a hospital. 

Palvai Govardhan Reddy, who was born on November 20, 1936 in Nadimpally in Mahabubnagar district is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. He did his intermediate and graduation (BA) from Viveka Vardhani College, at Mozamjahi Market in Hyderabad. 

The veteran politico, known for his bold statements on Congress affairs in the state, became Rajya Sabha member from undivided Andhra Pradesh in April 2012.

He was considered a key leader in Nalgonda district, which is the home district of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president N Uttam Kumar Reddy.

Govardhan Reddy was an MLA during 1967-72, 1972-78, 1978-83, 1983-85 and 1999-2004 in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh. During 2007-09, he was a member of the Andhra Pradesh legislative council.

He served as president of NSUI during his college days and was secretary of AP Youth Congress during the tenure of first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Congress leader served as minister of state for rural water supply, youth services and LIDCAP in the cabinet of Bhavanam Venkat Ram Reddy in 1981 and minister of state for handlooms and textiles, sericulture, printing and stationery in the Kotla Vijayabhasker Reddy cabinet in the then united AP.

Several leaders from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh condoled Palvai Govardhan Reddy’s death. Efforts are on to to bring his mortal remains to Hyderabad via Delhi. 

Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhara Rao remembered his association with Reddy during the Telangana movement and expressed his heart-felt condolences.
