Jolt to Telangana as High Court sets aside order on jobs to SCCL dependents

HYDERABAD: In another jolt to the state government, a division bench of the Hyderabad High Court on Thursday set aside the circular issued by the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) providing employment to the dependent persons of the employees on compassionate grounds under ‘Voluntary Retirement Scheme on health reasons.’

Against this backdrop, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao held an emergency meeting on the issue and decided to move the Supreme Court against the high court order. Earlier in the day, the bench of Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice J Uma Devi was allowing the PIL filed by K Satish Kumar, an unemployed person from Godavarikhani of Peddapalli district, seeking to grant stay on further proceedings of the impugned circular.

Senior counsel S Satyam Reddy, appearing for petitioner, alleged that the state government had intended to provide employment to about 30,000 dependent persons on compassionate grounds under the scheme. The decision to fill thousands of vacancies under the scheme will have severe impact on the unemployed youth, he said.
After hearing the case and perusing the material on record, the bench declared that the impugned scheme is discriminatory. Besides, the impugned scheme is also violative of the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995.
Further, it declared that the scheme is clearly violative of Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution. mORE:
