Container with cigarettes worth nearly Rs 4 crore robbed in Telangana

As the vehicle reached Pedamberpet on the outskirts of Hyderabad, armed persons travelling in two vehicles blocked the container, assaulted the driver and took control of the vehicle.

HYDERABAD: A container lorry laden with cigarettes worth Rs 4 crore was robbed by armed men in Choutuppal of Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana in the wee hours of Sunday.

The police said the container was on its way to Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh from Musheerabad in Hyderabad with a load of cigarettes. As the vehicle reached Pedamberpet on the outskirts of Hyderabad, armed persons travelling in two vehicles blocked the container, assaulted the driver and took control of the vehicle.

The miscreants then diverted the vehicle towards Choutuppal and shifted the consignment into another vehicle and fled, said the police. The driver of the container was later taken to a hilly terrain on the outskirts of Choutuppal where he was left.

The lorry driver reached Choutuppal police station and then registered a complaint.
