Sushma Swaraj asks US Embassy to issue visas to Chicago shootout victim's kin

An unknown person opened fire on Mohammed Akbar leaving severe cheek injury. He has undergone two surgeries and is currently stable.

HYDERABAD: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday asked the Consulate General in Chicago to immediately assist the family of shootout victim Mohammed Akbar, to get emergency visas to visit him at Chicago. The minister in her tweet mentioned, “I have asked for a report from our Consul General in Chicago,” for which the consulate general replied “We are fully aware of the situation and providing all necessary assistance to the student and his family.

The Consulate official visited hospital twice and Akbar’s condition is stable. Meanwhile, Akbar’s wife delivered a baby boy on Sunday. We have requested the US Embassy in India to issue visas to their family members.”Akbar, a Hyderabad resident has been to Chicago to pursue masters in computer science at Devry University. On Dec 6, at around 8.45 am, an unknown person opened fire on him leaving severe cheek injury to Akbar. He has undergone two surgeries and is currently stable.

Akbar’s elder brother Shafi on Monday said “We have not received any information from the US Embassy in India nor other officials regarding the emergency visas.”The family also met Telangana Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy on Sunday and requested him to help them in getting the visas.
