Procure paddy before rains ruin it, plead farmers in Telangana to officials

With unexpected rains damaging harvested stocks of paddy in some districts, farmers from Nizamabad district have been asking district officials to speed up procurement of paddy.

NIZAMABAD: Being a farmer in India can be frustrating. Right from the sowing of seeds to harvestingandstoring of their crops to getting fair prices for their crop, the cycle is challenging.

With unexpected rains damaging harvested stocks of paddy in some districts, farmers from Nizamabad district have been asking district officials to speed up procurement of paddy.

After a long time, farmers got a yield better than what was expected and harvesting is now complete in almost all major regions. Paddy has been stowed away but farmers have cited transportation issues, including non-availability of sufficient vehicles, shortage of labourers among other reasons as hinderances. However, there are several 245 paddy procurement centres in the district.

Some farmers from Nandipet and Balkonda said that it rained recently near Nizamsagar and Kamareddy.  “Every May, unexpected rains and hailstorm destroy crops in north Telangana districts. Officials should speed up procurement,” a farmer said. District joint collector A Ravindar Reddy said that in the district, over 10,000 Metric tons of paddy was purchased daily and 600 trips were arranged.
