KHAMMAM: People living in the low-lying areas at Bhadrachalam are in the grip of fear as water levels of river Godavari continued to rise on Sunday.The water level, which was recorded at 36 feet on Sunday evening, is expected to cross the first warning level of 43 feet by Monday morning.The Central Water Commission (CWC) has asked the district administration to stay alert and instructed the sectorial officials to be prepared to deal with any emergency situation.

Heavy inflows from Pranahita and Taliperu rivers are cited as the reason for the rise in water level in river Godavari. Irrigation officials have lifted 15 gates of Taliperu project through which about 77,000 cusecs of water is being released into river Godavari.Collector D Anudeep has asked the people to be alert and move to safer places. He also warned the fishermen against venturing into the river.

IMD issues yellow alert for monday

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a yellow alert (moderate to heavy rains) has been issued for Monday. It has been predicted that heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Nirmal and Nizamabad districts on Monday. So far, no rainfall has been predicted after Tuesday onwards
