Enamellist Veenu Shah loves and adores time spent at work. She looks forward to waking up each morning to head to her table where she starts her routine with a prayer. What follows is countless hours of designing and its execution. Even as we try and talk to her, she seemed distracted, trying to clean the delicate enamel handcrafted pendant that has gathered dust. The piece is from her on-going exhibition at the Art Heritage Gallery, that started on October 11.
Made on 99.9 percent silver, the artist’s work comprise modern meenakari with free-hand designs. Each piece is different from the other and no two pieces are the same. ‘‘It is the fusion of vitreous enamel powders made of glass and additives like potash, borax, etc to metals like copper, steel, gold and silver at high temperatures that bring out these brilliant results. This medium inspires me to turn a sheet of copper into a statement in single, dual, and multiple dimensions. The sheer versatility helps me create new things every time I sit to make something,” says Veenu.
The good thing about her jewellery is that it requires low maintenance. ‘‘It doesn’t fade or break unless dropped,’’ she says.
Veenu who is the founder and president of the Enamellist Society, India, and a member of Enamellist Society, USA, and North East Enamellist Guild, has exhibited her works in California USA, Tehran, Geneva, New York and other galleries. ‘‘Every time I work on a new collection, it makes me fall more and more in love with the medium. It is light, delicate and very feminine,’’ says the artist who has also introduced enamel paintings and other decorative household items as part of the new collection.
