CHANDIGARH: Gaundika village in Sirsa district of Haryana has decided that they will give their girls for marriage to only those families who have a toilet in their home.

Inspired by Bollywood film Toilet ek prem katha, the gram panchayat passed a resolution to this effect recently. Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar congratulated the panchayat for its unique decision.

Following the resolution, several banners and hoardings have come up across the village proclaiming: Beti wahin byahenge jis ghar me shauchalaya payenge (Marry daughter in only in that house where there is a toilet).

On the directions of the state government, the district administration had screened the Akshay Kumar starrer, Toilet ek prem katha, for all sarpanchs in the area to sensitise them about the need to build toilets.
Confirming the decision, Gaundika village sarpanch Dharmpal Mundlia said: “The girls or women in the village have to go out of their house early in the morning or late evening to attend to the call of nature and they do not feel safe. It was decided by the panchayat that we’ll not marry our daughters to people who don’t have toilets in their homes. This move will ensure the safety and well-being of the women and also ensure hygiene.”
