THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Here is a chance, if you ever felt desirous of visiting the hallowed campus of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre at Thumpa. The heavily guarded gates will be opened for the residents of Thiruvananthapuram on October 5 as part of World Space Week 2017. The programme is intended to educate the common man of the benefits of space science and technology. This includes a full day awareness programme on the VSSC campus including witnessing the launch of the sounding rocket and a visit to the space museum. The familiarisation  programme is open to those in the age group of 18 plus. The selection of participants will be on a  first come-first serve basis.
  
World Space Week is an international annual celebration of space science and technology, observed from October 4 to 10. The theme “Exploring New Worlds in Space”, is a forward looking one which serves to inspire the world. World Space Week has been celebrated every year under the auspices of  VSSC, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) and ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU), Thiruvananthapuram, since 2001. During WSW, events and educational programmes with special focus on space are organised within and outside VSSC, based on the theme declared by the United Nations.
