Six bulldozers were reportedly swung into action on Saturday to raze to the ground around twelve buildings of the Gandhian social service organisation.
"As the matter came up for hearing on Friday, the government apprised the court that "it is not at all a matter of ethnic cleansing".
The areas where the demolitions took place included spots where cars were burnt and stone-pelting took place during communal violence on July 31.
"We do not allow illegal constructions, but to deal with these situations we follow the due process and not force," the mayor told reporters.
Some people, who were part of the 'Baba Mahakal Sawari' procession in Ujjain on July 17, said they saw a few youngsters standing on the balcony of a building and "spitting water on them."
