As recently as last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had defended its surprise decision in May that vaccinated people did not have to wear masks indoors in most circumstances.
Dr. Anthony Fauci noted that some local jurisdictions where infection rates are surging are already calling on individuals to wear masks in indoor public spaces regardless of vaccination status.
