Over the past 12 months, wholesale prices are up 6.6 per cent, the largest 12-month increase on records going back to 2010.
Low base effect also contributed to the spike in WPI inflation in May 2021. In May 2020, WPI inflation was at (-) 3.37 per cent. This is the fifth straight month of uptick.
Inflation in the fuel and power basket was 10.25 per cent in March, against 0.58 per cent in February, mainly on account of rising prices of petrol and diesel.
However, high double-digit inflation in fuel at 17.73 per cent remained a matter of concern.
Calculated on the basis of Wholesale Price Index (WPI), the inflation was 3.93 per cent in November 2017 and 2.10 per cent in December 2016.
India's annual rate of inflation based on wholesale prices went up in October to 3.59 per cent, official data showed here on Tuesday.
