NMC's "Most Urgent" Order: Medical Colleges Must Report Every Student Death Now I Healthy Talks

The National Medical Commission has issued a strict new directive to every medical college in India, ordering them to maintain updated records of student suicides and unnatural deaths, and submit a certified Action Taken Report every single month.

The move follows Supreme Court directions on student mental health and safety, and the NMC has marked the compliance exercise "MOST URGENT."

This comes amid a sharp rise in student suicides — NCRB data shows 14,488 student deaths by suicide were recorded in 2024, up 4.3% from 2023, and nearly 80% higher than a decade ago. More than 1.15 lakh students have died by suicide between 2015 and 2024.
