YANGON: Myanmar President U Thein Sein met the visiting UN special envoy to Myanmar, Vijay Nambiar, in Nay Pyi Taw Tuesday, state radio and television reported.

Nambiar, the special adviser to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki- moon, also met with speaker of the House of Representatives U Shwe Mann and said that he has witnessed encouraging signs in Myanmar, Xinhua reported.

Nambiar, an Indian diplomat, was appointed the UN special envoy to Myanmar in 2010. He has been Ban Ki-moon's chief of staff since January 2007.

On Tuesday, he said the UN development programme (UNDP) will offer help for the country's upcoming by-elections in April.

Moreover, the special envoy also met Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin, the report said.

Nambiar arrived in Myanmar last Saturday for his third visit after the new government was set up March 30, 2011. He last visited Myanmar in October 2011.
