Sri Lanka gets new chief justice

Sri Lanka Tuesday got a new chief justice in Mohan Peiris, two days after Shirani Bandaranayake was sacked, Xinhua reported.

Peiris, a former attorney general who has represented the government at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, was nominated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and approved by a parliament council.

Rajapaksa removed Bandaranayake Sunday after parliament voted in favour of her impeachment over allegations against her.

Bandaranayake challenged the impeachment process, and a court found the process unconstitutional.

The US State Department warned Monday that the removal of chief justice Bandaranayake could impact on Sri Lanka's ability to attract foreign investment.
