Massive protests expected to hit Brazil

Brazilian officials are bracing for a wave of anti-government protests expected to hit the nation as it celebrates its independence day.

Protests have been called for in more than 100 cities on Saturday. The demonstrations are being organized by a wide spectrum of groups, from unions to anarchists to student movements.

Nationwide protests erupted in June after a brutal police crackdown on a group demonstrating against subway and bus fare hikes in Sao Paulo.

Protesters are demanding an end to corruption in Brazilian politics and quick improvements to woeful public services in exchange for the high taxes they pay.

Also being targeted Saturday is a soccer match between the national teams of Brazil and Australia. Protests are upset about the billions spent on stadiums to host next year's World Cup.
