DHAKA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today praised his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina's courage to fight terrorism despite being a woman and her bold stand against the menace by declaring "zero tolerance" towards it.

"We know solution for everything, but not terrorism. I am happy that Bangladesh Prime Minister, despite being a woman, has declared zero tolerance for terrorism," the Prime Minister said in his hour-long address to Dhaka University.

He said terrorism is an enemy of humanity, and therefore all humanitarian forces had to unite to fight it.

Earlier in a joint declaration at the end of his two-day maiden visit to Bangladesh, the two Prime Ministers expressed satisfaction at the unparallelled level of cooperation between the two countries on security related issues and reaffirmed their unequivocal and uncompromising position against extremism and terrorism in all forms and manifestations.

Modi and Hasina expressed their commitment to cooperate with each other by sharing information about groups and persons indulging in terrorism.

"They reiterated their commitment that their respective territories would not be allowed to be used for any activity inimical to the other. Prime Minister Modi expressed India’s appreciation for the cooperation extended by Bangladesh in security related matters," the joint declaration said.

The two Prime Ministers expressed satisfaction at the conclusion of the MOUs on prevention of smuggling of fake currency notes, cooperation between Coast Guards and prevention of human trafficking, all of which will augment security cooperation.

Bangladesh and India share a 4,096-km-long border, most of which is porous. Ties between India and Bangladesh are on an upswing ever since the Hasina government came to power in January 2009.

The Hasina government has taken steps against militants who take refuge in Bangladesh.

There has been perceptible decline in activities of Pakistan-backed fundamentalist elements in Bangladesh and Modi would like to further cement bilateral ties with the Hasina government considering India's strategic interests.
