WASHINGTON: The United States will vote this week against an annual United Nations resolution condemning the U.S. embargo on Cuba, reversing the Obama administration's abstention last year.

The State Department says U.S. will restore its opposition to the resolution when it comes up for a vote in the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday. The vote is the first on the embargo since President Donald Trump came into office and reflects his administration's new policy toward Cuba, which seeks to roll back the rapprochement that former President Barack Obama initiated.

Before 2016, the yearly vote had pitted the United States and dwindling number of allies against the rest of the world. But last year, after the two nations had restored full diplomatic ties, the Obama administration opted to abstain.
