Drivers forced to take part in protest seek police help

A senior transport department official said most of the demands raised by the drivers’ union are related to the labour department. “The cab aggregators and drivers should resolve the issues amicably,”

BENGALURU: A senior transport department official said most of the demands raised by the drivers’ union are related to the labour department. “The cab aggregators and drivers should resolve the issues amicably,” he added.

A spokesperson of a cab aggregator, who did not want to be named, said: “Only a section of drivers backed by an opposition party is protesting. They are also threatening other drivers to join the strike. Most of their demands are not practical. If they are implemented, it will affect the quality of services offered to the customers. The fare of the cabs will increase.”

K Radhakrishna Holla, president of Bangalore Tourist Taxi Owners Association, said: “It’s the duty of the government to provide safety to drivers and passengers. If protests continue, it will end in violence.”
Some drivers are not too happy with the ongoing strike.

“I don’t want to take part  but union members are forcing us to stay off roads. We are not getting  assistance from police also,” a Uber driver said.
