If I'd come from Mumbai, I'd have more films
When actor Saranya Nag debuted with Balaji Sakthivel’s Kadhal, playing Sandhya’s friend, she was just fifteen. At nineteen, SP Jananathan spotted her talent and cast her in Peraanmai. In Mazhai Kaalam she played nude model in an art college. But despite it all, Saranya is disappointed. She feels that the big break is still eluding her. But the girl who has Rettai Vaalu and Eera Veyil coming up for release, seems to have hit a high note in Tollywood, bagging a film produced by Mohan Babu. Speaking to CE, Saranya says, “Its been a trend that many heroines from Kollywood have made it big in Telugu and then come into demand in Tamil! Maybe this will happen to me as well!”
Saranya had earlier debuted in Telugu in Tenth Class in 2006. Now she returns in Sreenu Vytla’s Doosukeltha with Vishnu Manchu and Lavanya Tripathi. Saranya is optimistic that this will be her big ticket to fame. She does seems miffed with Kollywood, “Though I am a Telugu girl, I was born and brought up in Tamil Nadu and am one of the few Kollywood heroines who can read, write and speak Tamil and have dubbed for my own films here. But there seem to be very few takers for local heroines, whereas others are being signed up from all over the country! Maybe if were from Mumbai, more people would have cast me in their films here!”
But the actor has refused to let the disappointment sink in and has taken practical steps to prove herself. She reveals, “I did some thinking and decided to re-invent myself. Most of the roles I was doing were of a young school or college girl, which didn’t show the other side of me. So I did a photoshoot which showcased the classy, sophisticated, mature aspect of my personality. The industry folks who have seen the shots couldn’t believe it was me! So far, the response has been positive. All it takes is just one superhit to change the course of an actor’s career!”
Variety is the keyword for Saranya, “I don’t want to limit myself. Viewers should see different aspects of me in every film. If I am homely in one film, I want to be glamourous in another.” With her dogged perseverance, looks like Saranya is all set to achieve her dreams.
