Balle Vellaiyatheva review: A breezy rural romance with a flimsy storyline

Set in a rural milieu, the film is about Sakthivel, the son of a postmaster, and his life after his mother is transferred to a village. Meant to be a light breezy family entertainer with romance and action weaved in, it has a flimsy storyline on which the director has made a futile attempt to build up a screenplay.

The characters are superficial, and appear and disappear sporadically in the plot. Also, Sasikumar (also the film’s producer) seems to have taken his role a bit too casually, unlike his previous roles.

The film looks like a rehash of Sasikumar’s earlier ventures. But it’s a pale imitation with the intensity of characters and the high drama and action are missing. Even the romantic interludes, where Sahikumar woos the heroine through narrow lanes, reminds you of his earlier romances minus the chemistry. Tanya (granddaughter of yesteryear hero Ravichandran) makes a confident debut as the hero’s love interest. Incidentally, in the credit list, Kovai Sarala’s name tops, even before that of the hero’s.

Sarala plays the village bigwig’s wife who loves to take selfies. But after the initial scenes, she (like the rest of the characters) disappears from the plot for long periods. Talented actors like Rohini who plays the hero’s mother, get substantial scenes to justify their presence. The villain is Sundaram who runs a local cable network and finds the hero’s moves threatening to his business.

If the hero’s actions seem uninspiring, the villain fares no less, what with the hero constantly beating him and his gang of goons!

Steadily losing steam as the narration progresses, it is probably one of the weakest of the scripts that Sasikumar has worked in. It seems like the actor- producer wanted to take a break after the intense roles he had played in his earlier films! What’s appreciable is that the debutant director has managed to keep his story telling to just about 110 minutes. And thank god for that!
