Nothing cosies up your home than well-appointed wall shelves. Most of us pay a lot of attention to furniture such as sofas, tables and beds when decorating our homes but often end up overlooking this most essential of items. For, by displaying books and curios and personal souvenirs on them, you can add colour and character to your space and turn unoccupied walls into a prominent place to store and show off your things.

Shelves come in many shapes, sizes and materials. Wood shelves are easily the most timeless of styles and you can opt for built-ins or free-standing ones, depending on the space that you have. You can pick from solid wood, plywood or MDF—all of which can be designed to fit your budget.

Wood is a very versatile material and can be styled into antique or contemporary designs depending on your decor style. You can polish them dark or light brown to stay classic, or tint them in white or any other colour you wish. While neutral shades work well in most areas of the house, brightly coloured ones look great in children’s room. Really, from elaborate boxed in cabinets to minimal floating shelves, to those combined with glass, there’s a whole universe of wall shelves to choose from.

Another great material for shelving is metal. Metal shelves—usually in powder-coated wrought iron—look great in contemporary decor, especially if you’re going for an industrial look. You can either leave them in a blackish-grey tint, or paint them in any bright hue if you so desire.

Acrylic and engineered plastic is another modern material that has made its way into the world of engineering. Hardy and easy to maintain, these come in a multitude of shades and are ideal for children’s rooms.

Clearly, wall shelves are the most inexpensive and easily available decor accessory that can add warmth to your home. And the sky is the limit of how you can decorate them to suit your lifestyle.
