Bring back the backless this summer

BENGALURU : Backless tops are going to be your best friend this summer, say fashion experts. The experts observe a rise in the number of people searching for backless tops on the fashion websites in the past six months because the trend can be chic, sexy and ultra-feminine, all at the same time. Neha Bhasin, creative director, Jabong.com, says that the perception of fashion has changed in the previous decade and so have the choices. “There’s no room for fear.

Experimenting has taken centre stage. Therefore, when we speak about going backless this summer, it’s about embracing the current trend rather than just being brave,” she adds. She believes fashion isn’t about being direct but it’s about taking it out-of-the-box. “Exposed back and neck is almost a subversive alternative to cleavage—it’s subtle yet sexy,” she says.

Sushrita Setty, Myntra Fashion Expert, says, “Jeans complement the backless top like nothing else. As for the dress, a sexy pair of pumps is all you need.” She suggests to choose wisely. “The style of the back cut dictates the difference between an elegant silhouette, a sexy outfit or a sporty attire,” she says. Neha adds that the best and most essential part of going backless is to accentuate. “ If you want to go for a casual sporty look then team a backless top with a pair of high-waisted jeans or shorts keeping your hair tied up in a messy bun. But if you’re going more risqué with a backless midi dress then put on a pair of heels and a high ponytail is all you need to seal the deal,” she suggests.

How does the cut of a backless garment affect the complete look? Neha says, “Like any other fit, the cut here is essential - it needs to sit well on and at the right position. If you’re going for the half cut, then ensure it doesn’t create bulges on your back. And for those opting to go all the way down, it’s essential that the garment has good support on the neck as well as the lower waist.”  She says, “I was blown away by Kate Hudson’s iconic yellow backless satin gown in ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’. Also, Hilary Swank in the navy backless gown at the Oscars in 2005 was all about business-at-the-front and party-at-the-back.”

For those who are looking for a balance, go for angular cuts, she says adding, “The angular cut reveals just the right amount of skin and adds a modern spin to the classic backless look. Also, draped beads on the back elevate the dress up a few notches.”But do keep a check for any wardrobe malfunction. Sushrita says, “The one thing you absolutely need with anything backless is the right underwear, otherwise, it’s a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen! Invest in low-back bras, pasties, or backless bras.” Neha adds, “The trick is to choose one that you feel the most comfortable and confident in. If done otherwise you risk a wardrobe malfunction moment. Just ensure it sits well on your body.”
